Abstract:

This delightfully sentimental movie set itself apart from the many other World War II films of the day made to boost American morale. It's a fictional tale of the real-life story of New York City's Stage Door Canteen, where soldiers on their way to battle were entertained by stage and screen stars of the era. Countless celebrities make cameos in the film which was directed by Frank Borzage, first-ever recipient of the Academy Award for Best Director. "Dakota," a young soldier on a pass in New York City, visits the famed Stage Door Canteen, where famous stars of the theatre and films appear and host a recreational center for servicemen during the war. Dakota meets a pretty young hostess, Eileen, and they enjoy the many entertainers and a growing romance.
