Abstract:

Family correspondence (1886-1982), contracts and agreements (1937-1961), diaries (1981, 1982), family history information, cartoonist's sketches and drawings, and similar papers documenting the activities of Stan Asch, a cartoonist, and his brother, John Aschemeier (1913-1982), a writer. Asch began his cartooning career in 1926, his work appearing in Minnesota periodicals "The Farmer," "Farm, Stock & Home," and the "St. Paul Daily News." His cartoons also appeared in the "New Yorker," and he was associated with the McClure publishing syndicate. His brother John was associated with the St. Paul Catechetical Guild, and worked on various Catholic publications, including the "Leaflet Missal" and the "Catholic Digest." He later was secretary to the general manager of the "New York Sun," and worked for a variety of New York organizations and companies. In 1936 both men moved to New York City where they lived until 1981, when they moved back to St. Paul.

The collection contains information on the Aschemeier and related families and on the brothers' careers; samples of Stan's cartoons and sketches; their literary contracts and agreements; a folder of materials relating to an invention by their father, Luther W. Aschemeier (1911); and two diaries (1981, 1982) kept by Stan describing their last days in New York City and their return to St. Paul.

Items of particular interest include a letter (1886) from "John Card Newman" (no information was available to substantiate the authenticity of the letter); a folder of correspondence from artist Nicholas R. Brewer (1887, 1942-1946); autographs of prominent cartoonists "Bart" (Charles L. Bartholomew), J. N. Darling, Walt Disney, Fontaine Fox, Rube Goldberg, Sidney Smith, and Doc Winner; greeting cards from Charles Schulz, who is also frequently mentioned in Stan's diaries; Stan's report of his meeting with H. L. Mencken (letter, Jan. 17, 1938, no. 242); and Stan's statement of his conscientious objector beliefs (1943).
