Abstract:

The Stephen Francek collection contains personal correspondence, official papers, printed materials, and photographs. The personal correspondence consists of letters to his wife while he was serving in the United States (U.S.) Army in Japan, New Guinea, and the Philippine Islands during World War II. In one letter, he describes his unit's struggle behind Japanese lines in the Philippines as a member of D Company, 6th Ranger Battalion. The official papers consist of special orders regarding Francek's induction into the U.S. Army, certificates granting him clearance to retain items he obtained in Japan, and notice of his discharge. Printed materials include news of a raid on a Japanese prison camp and a "Guide to Kyoto." The photographs are of Fort McClellan and of Francek and his comrades in the Philippines, New Guinea, and Japan.
