Papers of the Stirling family of West Feliciana Parish, La., consist of two Confederate bonds for the sum of $1,000; a Confederate Army medical discharge application, dated 1862, written by enrolling officer L. Stirling, who declares James W. Johns, a soldier from West Feliciana Parish, La., unfit for military service due to a chest deformity; and a letter from a sister of Mrs. Stirling, N.D. Smith, to Mrs. R.G. Lewis of Baines, La., furnishing information about Jefferson Davis's marriage to his first wife, Sarah Knox Taylor, the daughter of U.S. President Zachary Taylor, who opposed the match.
