Abstract:

From its origins as a sport of Hawaiian nobility to the current death- defying acrobatics, Kampion (a former editor of a number of surfing magazines) details the development and global diffusion of the quintessential beach sport. The emphasis is on the personalities involved in the sport and related cultural developments in literature, music, and the movies, as well as the cultural conflicts within the sport itself such as the conflict between "professionals" and "locals" battling over wave "turf." The book is copiously illustrated with color photographs. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
