Adventure, nature, dogs--just wonderful   (2009-06-04)
Jim Kjelgaard was a master of YA fiction, fiction that can be enjoyed by all ages. He captivates and holds the reader to the very last word, leaving them wanting more. Fortunately, he wrote 45 books in his too brief life, all wondrous and fascinating. Kjelgaard has a deep love and respect for nature and wildlife, and brings us the story from the animals points of view as well as humans, but does this without sentimenalizing or making them human. He shows that people can be both good and bad, but mostly good, and that the same goes for animals.
Stormy is the story of a dog that has been mistreated and fends for himself until he meets the trapper, Allen Marley. Marley recognizes the dog is special, cares for him until they develop a trust that serves them well against the harshness of winter and of humans as well.
This is a rich book and children over 10 will love reading it. In fact, as an adult, I thouroughly loved this book. Highly recommended.
