Deep inelastic scattering measurements of the quark spin distribution in the proton do not agree with simple models. A sizable fraction of the proton spin appears to be carried by strange quarks and total quark spin projection along the proton spin vector is consistent with zero. Dr. Gerald T. Garvey, a senior fellow at Los Alamos, shows that a more direct way to measure the strange quark contribution to the quark spin is via elastic neutrino-proton scattering. He discusses results from previous neutrino-proton experiments and a new experiment to measure this potentially important effect.
