Abstract:

This report highlights the first phase of an ongoing study of libraries using the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) in the OCLC Online Union Catalog. The initial phase of this study had the following objectives: (1) identify OCLC member libraries who use the Dewey Decimal Classification as their primary classification; (2) study the usage by Dewey libraries of records with DDC numbers assigned by LC, OCLC member libraries, and cataloging agencies other than LC by determining the total frequency of usage and the frequency of usage based on certain characteristics (format, date of imprint, language, subject). Data collected in phase one of the study may serve as the basis for recommendations on the development and application of the Dewey Decimal Classification. The data may also highlight opportunities for cooperative cataloging efforts.
