Abstract:

The educational crises that the Korean church faces must be resolved not by using any special program or changing some strategies but re-framing the existing concept of Christian education. This paper analyzes Reformed spiritual formation as a significant resolution of the crises in that it can provide alternative concepts for educational philosophy and its methodology to Korean Christian education. To this end, on the one hand, this paper deals with the meaning and history of general spirituality and Christian spirituality as a root of spiritual formation. Furthermore, after analyzing the relationship between spirituality and piety, and between spirituality and Reformed theology, faith, and tradition, a definition and features of Reformed spirituality are presented. On the other hand, a definition and features of Reformed spiritual formation are presented in the understanding of Reformed spirituality and intentional religious socialization. In this understanding, Reformed spiritual formation is not a new program coming from other religious traditions, but lifelong catechesis in which the whole congregation participates in covenant relationship. Furthermore, it also emphasizes not only the restoration of the image of God in faith, but also holistic maturity through intentional religious socialization of the learning community.
