Abstract:

A collection of photographs documenting paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints by artists born after 1880 assembled by the Getty Research Institute. Of the approximately 2,300 individuals represented in the collection, the vast majority are European and American artists. The collection's holdings are particularly rich in works dating from 1900 to the beginning of the Second World War; French and German paintings and graphics are especially well represented.

The collection contains images from a number of personal picture archives, including sculptor Malvina Hoffman; scholars Willi Bongard and Hans Hildebrandt; New York art dealer Sam Salz; and the commercial photographer Gaston Cauvin. Material from Pomona College is strong in early modern European painting. Photographs and auction clippings were acquired from Douwes Fine Art Gallery and Duits.

Copy prints were acquired from commercial vendors such as Böhm and J.R. Freeman (works sold through Colnaghi). Other copy print sources include auction houses (Sotheby's and Christie's) and museums. Among the latter are: the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Phillips Collection, the national galleries in London and Washington, D.C., and the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, as well as smaller museums and galleries worldwide.
