Abstract:

An assembled collection of modern photographs of ancient sarcophagi with relief sculptural decoration, with concentration on examples from the Greek and Roman periods. Coverage of sarcophagi from museums in the following cities is notable: Adana, Ankara, Antakya, Antalya, Aphrodisias, Arles, Athens, Baltimore, Beirut, Boston, Bursa, Cambridge (Mass.), Cava de' Tirreni, Copenhagen, Cyrene, Damascus, Ephesus, Istanbul, Izmir, Iznik, Konya, Malibu, New York, Ostia, Pamukkale, Paris, Pisa, Rome, Salerno, Salona, Thessalonika, San Simeon, Side, Split, Termessos, Tyre, and Vatican City.

The collection contains photographs from a variety of sources, including commercial vendors and photographers and research institutions' and scholars' archives. Principal commercial sources include Alinari (with the Anderson and Brogi archives), Bulloz, Photographie Giraudon, Hirmer Verlag, Rheinisches Bildarchiv Köln, Gabinetto fotografico nazionale (Rome), Barbara Bini, John Ross, and Roberto Sigismondi. Research institutions' archives from which copy prints were acquired include the Centre Camille Jullian and the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (Rome). Copy prints of early 20th century stereographs were acquired from the California Museum of Photography, Riverside. In addition, the collection contains photographs acquired from scholar Ludwig Goldscheider, and a significant number of images derive from photodocumentation projects carried out by Guntram Koch, a specialist in the study of Roman sarcophagi.
