The collection contains photographs from a variety of sources, including commercial vendors and photographers and research institutions' and scholars' archives. Research institutions' archives from which copy prints were acquired include the Centre Camille Jullian and the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (Rome). Copy prints of early 20th century stereographs were acquired from the California Museum of Photography, Riverside. In addition, the collection contains photographs acquired from scholar Ludwig Goldscheider, and a significant number of images derive from photodocumentation projects carried out by Guntram Koch, a specialist in the study of Roman sarcophagi.
