Abstract:

A collection of photographs covering Austrian paintings and drawings from the late Middle Ages through the 19th century, representing the work of approximately 380 artists assembled by the Getty Research Institute. Artists well represented in the collection include: Giacomo Francesco Cipper, Franz de Paula Ferg, Joseph Anton Koch, Michael Pacher, Johann Georg Platzer, Moritz von Schwind, and Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller.

The collection contains photographs from numerous sources, including scholars' and dealers' archives, museums, auction houses, and commercial vendors. Scholars' archives include those of Giannino Marchig, Mauro Pellicioli, Wilhelm Arntz, Hans Hildebrandt, Ludwig Goldscheider, and J. G. van Gelder. Dealers' archives provided photographs and clippings from Douwes Fine Art Gallery, Duits and David Koetser. Copy prints were acquired from the Louvre, the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Sotheby's, Christies, and commercial vendors such as Gernsheim (the Corpus photographicum of drawings), Fratelli Alinari, Photographie Giraudon, and Mario Perotti.
