Abstract:

A collection of photographs covering English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish paintings and drawings dating from the 14th through the 19th centuries assembled by the Getty Research Institute. The collection represents the work of approximately 1,100 artists; those for whom the holdings are particularly strong include: William Blake, Edward Burne-Jones, John Constable, William Hogarth, Inigo Jones (drawings), Cornelius Johnson I, Thomas Lawrence, George Morland, Henry Raeburn, Joshua Reynolds, George Romney, Thomas Rowlandson, and Joseph Mallord William Turner.

The collection contains photographs from numerous sources. Scholarly and dealer archives from which materials were obtained include those of Alfred Scharf (duplicate items from the Witt Library collection), Ludwig Goldscheider, Giannino Marchig, Erwin Panofsky, Frank Simpson, and Pomona College. Photographs and auction clippings were acquired from the dealers P. de Boer, Douwes Fine Art Gallery, and Duits, Ltd.; archives acquired from Heim Gallery, French & Company, Julius Weiztner and David Koetser were also strong in their representation of the British school.

Copy prints were acquired from commercial sources such as Bulloz and Photographie Giraudon as well as from major auction houses (such as Christie's and Sotheby's) and numerous public collections. The latter include the Ashmolean, the British Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, the Cook Collection, the Wallace Collection, the British Museum, the National Portrait Gallery (London), the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Musée du Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick Collection, and the national galleries in Dublin, London, and Washington, D.C. Also strongly represented are drawings from the collection of the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth.
