Anotace:

A collection of modern photographic prints assembled by the Getty Research Institute covering Italian paintings and drawings from the late middle ages through the 19th century. The collection is particularly strong in its documentation of old master drawings from the Italian Renaissance through the Baroque periods. European old master paintings from private collections and small provincial museums are also represented.

Also represented are photographs from the archives of scholars and conservators. These include David Alan Brown (Emilian paintings); Sherwood A. Fehm (early Italian, Sienese school); Ludwig Goldscheider; Giannino Marchig; Erwin Panofsky; Mauro Pellicioli; and Mario Salmi. Of special interest is the Giulio Romano photographic study collection assembled by Frederick Hartt. Other important sources for this core collection are art dealers' archives. These include photographs and auction catalog clippings from Douwes Fine Art and Duits Gallery. Photographs from French & Company and David Koetser represent European and Venetian schools.

The collection contains photographs from museum collections and auction houses. The museum collections include Italian drawings from the British Royal collection and old master drawings from the Gabinetto disegni e stampe degli Uffizi, Graphische Sammlung Albertina, and Service de documentation du Musée du Louvre. The most significant sources of auction house photographs are Sotheby's and Christie's. Holdings of the Detroit Institute of Arts are represented by 157 photographs. In addition, some photographs have been acquired from academic institutions, for instance, the Pomona College collection which includes photographs of old master paintings.
