Viva Montgomerie and her artist sister Alswen describe Monaco and its surroundings in the carefree days just prior to the First World War. The narrative is filled with historical snippets and reflections on the natives and the English ex-pats. One story relates how the wealthy aristocrats imported British wild birds because they missed native bird song and another tells of how high number hymns had to be sung due to the betting tendencies of the church congregation. The book is well illustrated by Alswen, however the views lack character and insight. A beautifully produced book with high quality cover and paper.
