Abstract:

Being plunged into the abyss, that deep, open space of transition, challenges the church with the threatening experience of change. For pastor and congregation the identity as a people of God is questioned. Faith symbols become blurred, apathy develops, and survival becomes the mode. The challenge rests in recapturing and reclaiming the promises of hope which will energize and revive faithful witness in sharing the gospel. In facing this period of transition, the partnership of church and pastor are nourished by the triad of story: God, self, and others. Storytelling, the bridge between past and future, enacts the movements of renewal and hope.
