Abstract:
The sustainability of the long-term access and preservation of digital materials is a well known challenge, and discussion frequently focuses on the difficult technical issues. Less clearly articulated are the organizational and economic issues implicit in the notion of sustainability which, at the risk of over-simplification, come down to two questions: How much does it cost? and Who should pay? Parsing these questions, and understanding how we might address them, led to the conceptualization and ultimate organization of the Blue Ribbon Task Force on Sustainable Digital Preservation and Access. This Interim Report represents the work of this Task Force in its first year, and sets forth the conceptual framework that will guide its efforts in the second and final year. The synthesis of the Task Force's investigations will be the focus of its Final Report in 2009, which will provide an economic framework, and practical recommendations and strategies for sustainable digital preservation and access. {from Preface}
