Deceptively quiet book    (2010-04-22)

"Sweet, Hereafter" is the third book in Johnson's "Heaven" Trilogy. In it we are reintroduced to Shoogy, who appears in supporting rolls in the other two books. Shoogy, having run away from home, is living in a cabin in the woods near Heaven with her boyfriend Curtis, an army reservist. While Shoogy juggles part-time classes at the local high school and a job, Curtis struggles with what happened to him in Iraq, knowing that he will eventually be called back. In spare poetic prose, Johnson tells of love's mysteries and war's incalculable damage. This is a deceptively quiet book that will resonate with the reader long after the book's final tragedy.
