Syd the Kid is the autobiography of a young man named Sydney Humphreys, of Evanston, Illinois. Born in 1987, the book spans his life from age seven to twenty - a time filled with suffering and fear due to the multitude and magnitude of struggles he endures growing up. Humphreys' mother was extremely abusive of him in many ways, as well as of his younger brother Jason, and through each brother's attempts to cope with and understand their situation, a striking dichotomy is established between their mother's world view and that of the Humphreys children's father, their faithful yet seemingly powerless hero. A symbolic battle thus is waged alongside the physical as Sydney and Jason must choose between the heartless, yet seemingly easier and more sensible path of their mother or the loving yet long-suffering path of their father. The painful questions regarding life and the world only increase in depth and urgency through Sydney's dramatic relationship with his first girlfriend, Jennifer, and disconcerting developments concerning his brother, friends, and father. Essential truths of reality itself, especially concerning love, are at stake in conjunction with the state of Sydney's very well-being through an extraordinary collection of the 35 individual stories from his life which combine to comprise this amazing, inspiring, life-changing book. It is truly a must-read.
