Abstract:

Jonah becomes the host of a radio telephone call-in show for the night, known as a "talkback host" in New Zealand, when her sometime lover Roger, the show's regular host, (for whom she screens callers) abruptly walks out of the studio. His hasty exit is a mystery to both Jonah and the show's regular listeners. Their curiosity if fueled when a caller reveals that Roger's wife is in labor. The "talkback" lines run hot-- but Jonah suspects that the impending birth is not the happy event her callers-- Roger's fans-- believe it to be. Through the night, Jonah becomes increasingly comfortable in her new role as the "talkback host", and increasingly drawn to the strangers and their stories who call to talk on air. But one final caller takes her by surprise.
