Abstract:

50 men and women set out in the 23rd century from Earth aboard an interstellar craft to travel to a planet 30 light-years away, but the ship's deceleration system is irreparably damaged when it hits a cloud of interstellar dust, and acceleration continues toward light speed, tau zero. The crew has one desperate chance for survival: travel to where gamma rays are so thin that the crew can safely travel outside the craft to make repairs. But to leave the galaxy in a feasible amount of subjective time, they will have to reach very nearly the speed of light. That means that they have to keep accelerating. Or die.
