摘要:

This is not a volume of the complete "life and works" type. That would be impossible in the limited space at my disposal. Nevertheless it will serve both as an introduction to Tchaikovsky for the general reader and also, I hope, as a long overdue reassessment of a composer whose compositions tend to produce a totally different though equally stereotyped reaction in the sophisticated critic on the one hand, and the plain, unprejudiced listener on the other. It replaces Edwin Evans's volume, the original edition of which dates from as long ago as 1906, since when substantial new Russian material has become available. - Preface.
