Abstract:

The papers of T.D. Johnston consist chiefly of political and business correspondence in the 1870s when he was a leading Democratic member of the North Carolina legislature. Also included are Johnston's notes on the law lectures of Richmond Mumford Pearson; antebellum papers of his father, William Johnston of Waynesville in Haywood County, N.C., including a book of poems written to members of the family (on microfilm); minutes of the Spartanburg, S.C., Methodist Sunday School Relief Society, 1861-1863; a scrapbook, 1862-1864; and a typed copy of the Dillard family history. The collection does not relate to T.D. Johnston's career as a U.S. representative, 1885-1889.
