Abstract:

This paper presents an overview of governmental technology policy in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). It discusses the important role of FRG technology policy in geopolitics and the management sciences, reviews the evolution of FRG industrial policy, describes the technology policies of the current conservative government, and reviews other governmental institutions involved in technology policy. The diverse institutions and policies in the FRG suggest that there is little coordination of technology policy. Individual institutions seek to implement technology policy to suit their own aims and there is no obvious plan or policy to unify or coordinate their activities. The central issue is whether such a system makes a positive contribution to the economy and whether technology policy would be more effective if better coordinated.
