Reestablishing the profit motive for farmers, she believes, could help turn the world's largest recipient of food aid into a regional food basket and would help alleviate them from living at the mercy of forces beyond their control. "African agriculture today is among, or is, the most under-capitalized in the world," says Gabre-Madhin in this TEDTalk as she outlines her ambitious vision. "Only seven percent of arable land in Africa is irrigated, compared to 40 percent in Asia."
