摘要:

Economist Eleni Gabre-Madhin left her job as a World Bank senior economist in Washington, DC, to found the first commodities market in Ethiopia, bringing rates and standards (not to mention trading systems, warehousing, and data centers) to the trade of crops. Reestablishing the profit motive for farmers, she believes, could help turn the world's largest recipient of food aid into a regional food basket and would help alleviate them from living at the mercy of forces beyond their control. "African agriculture today is among, or is, the most under-capitalized in the world," says Gabre-Madhin in this TEDTalk as she outlines her ambitious vision. "Only seven percent of arable land in Africa is irrigated, compared to 40 percent in Asia."
