Abstract:

In 1974, while digging a well in a field near the Chinese city of Xian, two farmers unearthed a life-size figure of an ancient warrior. Further digging revealed over 7,500 terra cotta warriors, each one individually crafted and posed. Some stood at attention holding spears, others knelt with bows and arrows, and still others were on horseback. Remarkably preserved and intact, this silent army of clay warriors has been on guard for over 2,000 years. What they were guarding was a tomb -- the tomb of China's first emperor, Emperor Qin. The story of who Qin was and how and why he had this ghostly army created to guard his burial place has slowly unfolded as archaeologists and historians have excavated and studied the terra cotta figures. Now, come behind the scenes and discover the secrets that have long been guarded by the terra cotta army of Emperor Qin.
