Abstract:

"Bunuel's only documentary depicts Las Hurdes: an isolated, impoverished Spanish community. Houses have no windows and most of its 6,000 inhabitants have never eaten bread. The only water sources are mosquito-filled creeks. Malnutrition and lack of hygiene are responsible for diseases, while intermarriage and incest results in retardation and dwarfism. Most of the townspeople will eat, sleep, and die in the same room and the Church is the centre of their lives. Las Hurdes reprises the director's fascination with human cruelty and the corruption of the Catholic Church. Bunuel allows the images to speak for themselves, with unflinching commentary by poet Pierre Unik as an adjunct. The film was immediately banned in Spain"--Container.
