Abstract:

Paper 1: The three-edge bearing test is the standard test in general use for concrete pipe of all sizes to determine the load to produce a 0.01-inch-crack and the load to produce ultimate failure. Relatively few such tests have been performed on pipe larger than 72 inches in diameter. Tests on 84-inch reinforced- concrete pipe indicate that some type of reinforcement is needed to prevent a shear failure in the larger sizes of pipe if the full strength of the pipe is to be developed. Paper 2: An analysis is presented and a formula developed for predicting the vertical and horizontal deflection or change in diameter of timber-strutted corrugated-metal-pipe culverts under earth fills.
