Note especially how the rattlesnake arches its neck (C) and when finished, throws open its jaws to disengage from the prey (D). Seconds between successive frames are approximately 0.05, 0.09 and 0.05 sec, respectively. Film 206.
Fig. 2. A strike that missed. Although jaws opened and fangs erected normally, this snake missed the presented mouse entirely. This frame shows the snake at the end of the missed strike when velocity of its head had dropped to nearly zero. Film 171c.
