Black velvet lining on front and back and red velvet on moveable center section.
Double view case, made expressly for the ambrotype. A moveable center section contains the transparent glass photograph which, when pressed against either velvet lining, presents a clear picture.
Exterior of case is faded purple leather bordered by dark brown papier-mache︠.
The leather section of the case is outlined on the edge in what is known as the rectangle design, a type of case embellishment produced ca. 1853-54.
Lyman was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1883 to 1885.
