Collection mss. consist of Roosevelt's personal, rather than official papers (see: Related records below), particularly in the pre- and post-presidential periods; also those of his parents, Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. and Martha (Bulloch) Roosevelt, his sisters, Anna (Roosevelt) Cowles and Corinne (Roosevelt) Robinson, his wives, Alice Hathaway (Lee) Roosevelt and Edith Kermit (Carow) Roosevelt, and children Archibald Bulloch Roosevelt and Ethel Carow (Roosevelt) Derby; also those of many other 'Oyster Bay' Roosevelts. Described here are mss. relating directly to Theodore Roosevelt. For mss. relating to Roosevelt family members generally see: Theodore Roosevelt Collection: manuscripts--Roosevelt family papers.

Theodore Roosevelt: Mss. document all phases of his career, but especially childhood and youth, Harvard, New York Assembly, Dakota, Spanish-American War, and post-presidential years.

Diaries: Childhood and youth (1868-1877) (1878-1884 at LC), and later occasional diaries (e.g., 1898 (Spanish-American War); 1909-1910 (African safari and European tour)). Juvenilia, including natural history notebooks; Harvard/Assembly scrapbook; Dakota ranching documents. Drafts of articles and speeches, also The wilderness hunter (1893) and African game trails (1910). Publication contracts.

Family correspondence: Letters to and from his parents, Theodore Roosevelt, Sr., and Martha (Bulloch) Roosevelt; to his sisters, Anna (Roosevelt) Cowles and Corinne (Roosevelt) Robinson; to and from his wives, Alice Hathaway (Lee) Roosevelt and Edith Kermit (Carow) Roosevelt; to his children (including picture letters), especially Archibald Bulloch Roosevelt, Ethel Carow (Roosevelt) Derby, Kermit Roosevelt, and Quentin Roosevelt.

Other correspondence: Various letters to, from, and about TR include those from him to Avery Delano Andrews, Joseph Bucklin Bishop, Edward William Bok, William Sheffield Cowles, Maurice Francis Egan, Bradley Tyler Johnson, John Callan O'Laughlin, Frances Theodora (Smith) Dana Parsons, Regis Henri Post, and Lincoln Steffens.
