Abstract:

Told from the perspective of three main characters, this film gives a human face to the direct impacts of climate change on the remote Pacific island of Takū. The films follows the lives of Satty, Telo and Endar as they face the first devastating effects of climate change. As an enormous flood threatens to engulf their paradise, who will decide to flee and leave their culture behind forever? And who will stay, hoping that God will save them? Two visiting scientists offer advice but in the wake of a flood the islanders must decide whether to stay with their island or move to an unfamiliar land, leaving their culture and language behind. "I like my home. I have the sea, I have the crops. I could live," Satty says, surveying the aquamarine sea. Like Satty, Telo knows that the tribe's culture -- its unique language and ancient dances -- would probably not survive if they moved to the mainland. Nevertheless, he boards the boat with his family to leave the island and enter a foreign land were trees are replaced by billboards. This powerful documentary demonstrates the very real cost of climate change.
