Abstract:

"J. Raymond Wilton was Professor of Mathematics at the University of Adelaide from 1920 to 1944. The measure of his greatness as a mathematician can be judged from what the Faculty of Science recorded of him: "He became one of the world's authorities in analysis and theory of numbers." But this book contains none of his mathematical works. Here are addresses given to university students, talks prepared for the daily broadcast service, articles written for various papers and a lecture on Dante's 'Divine comedy'. There is also a short biographical note. Professor Wilton had wide interests. He was an active member of the Society of Friends, a keen worker in the cause of peace, a lover of literature, of music, of children, and this book should therefore appeal to a wide audience. These papers are published primarily because they "speak to the condition" of our times. They voice in language that is simple and beautiful his deepest conviction - "God is love". 'Love, faith, hope, these three were for him the way of life." -- dustjacket fly-leaf.
