Abstract:

Consists of correspondence, speeches, diaries, daybooks, manuscripts, ships' logs, military records, reports, printed material, photographs, and clippings that document the life of Thomas J. Watson, Jr. About 25% of the collection consists of files from Watson's term as Ambassodor to the Soviet Union and about 15% of the collection consists of speeches. There is a dearth of material about I.B.M. The bulk of the I.B.M. series consists of letters written to Watson when he announced his retirement from the company.

The Correspondence: Personal: Family series partially documents the manner in which Thomas J. Watson, Sr., and Thomas J. Watson, Jr., viewed the management of I.B.M. and their changing roles in the corporation. The two men often discussed their relationship in these letters. Some additional correspondence related to I.B.M. is scattered throughout other series. The Correspondence: Personal: Family series includes letters from Jeanette Kittredge Watson to Thomas J. Watson, Jr., that describe family life, especially travel.

Watson's activities are documented through the various correspondence files, especially the chronological correspondence. While some of the organizations in which he served are documented in separate files, much of Watson's life outside of I.B.M. is documented in the correspondence files. For example, there are no files specifically for Brown University, but Watson's interest in the university is documented in the various correspondence series and in the Ambassador to Moscow series Subject Files.

The Diaries series consists of descriptions of Watson's civilian travels and his experiences during World War II. In 1930 he traveled in Europe and in 1937 he traveled in Europe, Japan, Korea, and China, including Manchuria. The military diaries include detailed descriptions of the Soviet Union and the Pacific islands as well as Watson's personal experiences.

Watson was involved in political activities, such as supporting candidates and serving on government committees. His relationships with Charles H. Percy and the Kennedy family is documented. Watson served on Jimmy Carter's General Advisory Committee on Arms Control and Disarmament (1977-1979), Lyndon B. Johnson's President's Task Force on the War Against Poverty, the President's Commission on Income Maintenance Programs, and the President's Advisory Committee on Labor Management Policy. The Ambassador to Moscow series documents the nomination, confirmation, term of service, and resignation of Watson. Part of the series is personal or documents unofficial correspondents, requests for assistance, and travel. Social life in the Ambassador's residence, Spaso House, is documented.

The Yachts and Racing series consists primarily of ships' logs that record details of cruising and racing worldwide. The Trips and Travel series also includes descriptions of yachting.

The Thomas J. Watson, Sr., series includes a few items from the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Co. and the National Cash Register Co. There are some mss., including a reminiscence, that give some insight to the life of Watson, Sr., and other records that document some of Watson, Sr.'s, early business transactions.
