As a member of the St. Louis Missouri Fur Company's expedition of 1809-10 to the headwaters of the Missouri he was one of the first Americans to traverse this then remote area; and as a trader to Santa Fe and to the Comanche Indians in the years 1821-23 he was again one of the first Americans to describe the southwestern area extending from St. Louis to Santa Fe. General James' experiences were frequently thrilling and recital of them is detailed and vivid."--Introduction.
