Abstract:

Sixth in a series combining history and science to discover why major technological changes occurred and traces these inventions to seemingly unrelated "triggers" during the past 12,000 years. This segment details many of the changes in building construction and energy usage which occurred when the climate of Europe changed dramatically in the 13th century. Shows how the scarcity of firewood contributed to the invention of the steam engine, which was the predecessor of gasoline-powered engines of today and led to the airplane and other vehicles.
