As one of the most popular music reviewers in the country, I am used to being pandered to by the mightiest of music agents; free tickets, meet and greets, money and more. I have the industry by the short and curly hairs and I make no hesitation of throwing my weight around to suit my own ends.
Recently I was approached by one of my fleet of helicopter pilots to listen to the “Time of My Life” album from the Paul Johnson singers. Usually I refuse to make eye contact with my private staff let along indulge them with a verbal exchange, however on this particular day I had an inordinate amount of generosity so as to take mercy on this poor soul who approached me as if he were my equal and shared with me his simple thoughts regarding the art of music.
After taking the record album from his wretched hands and subsequently washing thoroughly, I put it on my turntable; my special music mechanism that cost perhaps twice this plebian’s annual salary. And how happy I am now that I listened to this brave fool; From the first moments of “I’ll Never Be The Same Again” I knew that this was a masterpiece. Oh what a joyous sound that I heard; sweeping orchestral arrangements fill this masterful work of the Paul Johnson Singers, a tour de force of late 70s gospel music.
There are many strong tracks on this compilation, each one vying for the highpoint of the record. Without a doubt one of the top contenders is “Jesus Led Me All The Way”, featuring a duet between Paul Johnson and his then wife Kathie Lee Johnson, who we have since known as the remarried Kathie Lee Gifford. In this track, her voice is as young and as strong as a Nickelodeon star, and almost equally difficult to pin down. Her great talents were clear and it is no wonder that she eventually moved on to bigger fame and better roles such as spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Lines or management of her own discount clothing line.
“The Time of My Life” closes with “Crown Him with Many Crowns”, Johnsons’ own brave salute to the Harlem Globetrotters. His lyrical proficiencies in this particular track pose the question why Johnson himself was not considered one of the many godfathers of rap music.
After my listen with tremendous satisfaction, I found myself utterly depressed. Life will never reach a high like this again. Everyone in this world only has once to fully enjoy and be changed by Paul Johnsons Singers’ “The Time of My Life”. Now that my time was over, I slipped into denial immediately attempting to restart the record or even searching for the 2nd record of what my ever-growing paranoia told me had to have been a double album. Then I became angry and had the mouthy helicopter pilot killed immediately with a machete. However I am now safely at the acceptance phase and relish the feeling that, through this experience I have gained wisdom for which I can pass onto others. And it is on that note that I would highly recommend you having a similar life-changing experience with the Paul Johnson Singers. Peace be with you; and also with you.
