Features the history of the invention and inventors of sewing machines. Elias Howe, inventor of the sewing machine, was born in Spencer, Massachusetts on July 9, 1819. Also, on July 9, 1793, Vermont completed revisions to its constitution, the first in the United States to prohibit slavery.
