Summary:
This book develops an approach to tone that integrates autosegmental theory into the general framework of lexical morphology and phonology. Case studies of a number of languages including DschangBamileke, Margi, Tiv, Tonga and Yoruba are used to argue for revisions in current phonological theory. The universal principles governing autosegmental associations are shown to depend crucially for their correct application  Read more...

    schema:description "This book develops an approach to tone that integrates autosegmental theory into the general framework of lexical morphology and phonology. Case studies of a number of languages including DschangBamileke, Margi, Tiv, Tonga and Yoruba are used to argue for revisions in current phonological theory. The universal principles governing autosegmental associations are shown to depend crucially for their correct application on morphological configurations and are shown to be supplemented in many cases by the application of default rules - rules that supply redundant feature values. A constrained theory of such default rules is proposed, whereby all predictable information is excluded from underlying phonological entries that are ultimately filled out by redundancy rules subject to language-specific variation in limited parametrized ways. Apart from its importance for pure "tone" languages, the theory of underspecification and default rules is shown to play a crucial role in the analysis of pitch-accent languages. In general, the principles and constraints of lexical phonology - previously established with reference to non-tonal phenomena - are shown to govern the application of tonal rules at the sub-word and phrasal levels."@en ;
