Abstract:

Intermission features Walter Hendl, an American conductor, who first met Toscanini in Dallas where maestro was giving a concert, and since Hendl at the time was the principal conductor of the Dallas Symphony, the two men met and bonded. At Toscanini's invitation, Hendl always visited him when in New York, and made sure to prepare a musical question they could discuss. Calling Toscanini "a contemporary conductor", he attributes maestro with bringing clarity, texture, and balance into music, breaking away from German tradition, and changing tempi.
