Abstract:

Papers, 1773-1893, related to the Lawrence, Townsend, and Bowne families. They contain correspondence; deeds, leases, mortgages, etc., pertaining to Bowne and Lawrence properties in New York State, Vermont, and Tioga County (Pa.); and miscellaneous bound volumes kept by members of the Lawrence, Townsend and Bowne families. The land documents mostly concern properties of Walter Bowne, John Watson Lawrence, Effingham Lawrence, and Benjamin W. North. The largest body of letters consists of personal and business correspondence, 1824-1862, of John Watson Lawrence, of Flushing (N.Y.); this material includes letters from Mary Bowne, Flushing (N.Y.); Robert Bell, Liverpool, England; Henry F. Janes, Waterbury (Ct.); William Denison; Miles Coe, Newark (N.J.); Isaac Denison, Burke (Vt.); Jacob Schieffelin, Tioga (Pa.); John Beckwith, Sutton (Vt.); E.W. Budington, Kingston (N.Y.); and David L. Ogden, Jr., New York City. Smaller series of letters include: 66 letters to Robert W. Mott, of Queens county (N.Y.), 1815-1843, mostly about the Long Island Railroad, efforts to establish a turnpike on the north shore of Long Island, and his interests and duties as a corresponding member of the Republican (Whig) Party; 11 letters written by Philip Hicks, of Antigua, 1773-1784, several to his sister, Eliza Hicks; 10 letters written by Walter Bowne, 1811-1842; two letters, dated 1797, written by Eliza Southgate, who later married Walter Bowne; and one letter written in 1818 by Mary Southgate. Other material includes a receipt book of John Watson Lawrence, 1820-1835; an account book, 1844-1848, and a rent book, recording leases, 1847-1866; a diary of Walter Bowne Lawrence, kept while in Europe in 1860; a family history of the Lawrence and Townsend families; copies of Lawrence and Bowne family letters; a diary of Annie L. Lawrence, 1872-1873, at Flushing; two poetry albums of C. Annie Townsend, and her notes on ceramics; copies of letters of Eliza Southgate, 1797-1809; a typescript, illustrated with photographs, about an unidentified person's hunting trip to Labrador in 1893, which describes the voyage from Brooklyn, the trip overland to the Hudson Bay Company's post, fishing and hunting, life among the Inuit, and social life in Pictou, Nova Scotia; and some share and membership certificates.
