Abstract:

This resource provides and overview of the elements needed in a coherent programme of trainer development, opposed to the ad hoc methods of preparing trainers that have until now been prevalent. The chapters examine aspects of successful practice and sound principles drawn from a variety of situations worldwide. Each chapter discusses experiences which may be generalised to other situations, making the volume useful for anyone involved in programmes to develop teacher trainers. A particular feature of this book is the number of chapters exploring the development of trainers from the personal perspectives of those involved. Though the chapters focus primarily on the development of English language trainers, the principles they discuss are relevant to the development of trainers for any second/foreign language situation or curriculum area. Table of contents: * Trainer development: Principles and practices – An introduction (David Hayes) * A teacher educator’s story of developing understanding (Angi Malderez) * The tree of life: From teacher to teacher educator (Thomas Farrell) * Inside INSET: Trainers’ perceptions (David Hayes) * Beliefs, concepts and the training of trainers (Ray Brown) * Trainer journals, reflection and development (Richard Watson Todd) * The social and cultural dimensions of trainer training (Stephen Bax) * The skills of training: Developing trainers for INSET courses in Tanzania (Richard Cullen) * Training trainers in counselling skills: Essential elements for a trainer training course (Mick Randall) * Trainer training across the curriculum (Psyche Kennett) * Packs for the progressive curriculum: Materials development in trainer training (Richard Kiely) * Building reflective practice into INSET trainer training: a case study from Thailand (Jonathan Shaw, Richmond Stroupe, Terry Clayton and William Conley) * Training trainers for primary school head teacher training in Kenya: a cascade strategy (Andrew Herriot) * Characterising the impact of trainer training (Hywel Coleman).
