Abstract:

In the author's own words this is "...the wayside notes of a happy vagabondizing. It is the simple story of joy on legs." An exciting account of the experiences of young Lummis as he walked in a roundabout way from Cincinnati to Los Angeles. The areas he covered were far wilder in 1884 than they are today, but, they are still a haven for those who want to avoid the "fences of civilization" as Lummis did. He encounters good men, bad men, a vicious dog, wild cat, mountain lion, cougar, rattlesnake, tarantulas, intense cold of the mountains in a snow storm, blistering heat of the desert. Only a person in good physical condition could withstand the rigorous demands of walking twenty, thirty, of fifty miles in a day as Lummis did. He would often have gone without food had he not been a good fisherman and marksman. Even when food was scarce. His agility and quick reason saved his life at least three times. Once in an encounter with a convict, once with a mountain lion, and once with his own dog. One of the most poignant episodes is the killing of his faithful greyhound dog Shadow who suddenly turns mad -- Book jacket.
