Abstract:

Ms. and typescript transcripts of selected documents in the Hudson's Bay Company Archives, compiled in 1905 by Agnes C. Laut.

Hudson's Bay records transcribed include entries of 1671-1821 from Company minute books (v. 1-3); Company stock and ledger books of 1667-1791 (v. 5); and documents concerning the Hudson's Bay Company and the Northwest Company, 1818-1819 (v. 9). Travel literature related to the Hudson's Bay Company and exploration of Canada include accounts by Peter Esprit Radisson of his experiences among the North American Indians between 1652 and 1684, published by the Prince Society in 1885 (v. 4); accounts of 1754-1755 by fur trader Anthony Hendry, and 1772-1773 by Matthew Cocking (v. 6); various descriptions of explorations in Snake country by Peter Skene Ogden and Alexander Ross between 1824-1831 (v. 10), and Francis N. Humain's Journal of a voyage from Ft. George, Columbia River, to Fraser River, 1824-1825 (v. 10). Vol. 7 contains papers of the Earl of Selkirk from 1812-1824 concerning Red River Settlement, Indian relations, fur trade, and the war in America; and v. 8 contains letters of Colin Robertson from 1815-1821. Explorations by Simon McGillivray to the Northwest Territory, to Fort Simpson in 1840, and Fort Nepowiwin in 1850 are documented in v. 12. Documents dealing with exploration and settlement of Virginia include the first book of William Strachey's Historie of travaile into Virginia Britannia in v. 11, and Journal and relation of a new discovery in West Virginia (v. 13). Vols. 14-16 concern the shooting of an Army officer, Sgt. Wylde, by the Kainah Indian, "Charcoal", on the Blood Reserve, in Alberta, Canada in 1896, and include an extract from the 1897 report on the killing by Indian agent, James Wilson. Vol. 17 is Robert Campbell's Discovery and exploration of the Youcon (Pelly) River.
