Abstract:

Collection consists mainly of African-American air travelers, either departing from or arriving at New York City airports, during the 1950s and 1960s.

Images consist of candid shots and group portraits of individuals either gathered on airport tarmacs and/or posing on airplane boarding ramps. Included is a candid portrait of African Methodist Episcopal Church bishop Samuel R. Higgins and his wife preparing to board a plane for Monrovia, Liberia (n.d.). Also depicted are two undated candid shots of individuals traveling by ship; and a group portrait of the Black Americans to Support Israel Committee, which includes actor Frederick O'Neal and activist Bayard Rustin, at the John F. Kennedy Memorial in Jerusalem (1977).
