I really, really, REALLY love Travels With Louis! When I finished it, the characters kept living in my head for days--so I picked it up and read it again. As a musician, it has made me seek out even more of Louis Armstrong's wonderful music--AND Langston Hughes' poetry--AND the music of Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington. I hope that schools across the country begin using this novel; it could start a musical revolution with today's kids. This is a rich read, filled with full-blooded characters, humor, and heart. As I'm typing this, I can still see Big Fred, reading his evening newspapers in his favorite chair, his son's trumpet playing floating down from upstairs. I'm an adult, but Travels With Louis is the finest novel I have read in a LONG time.

My son loved this first, so I gave it a whirl. Travels With Louis is a big-hearted ride of a book. At one moment the reader is hanging with Langston Hughes in the Village Vanguard. Then the reader is sitting with Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie on a relaxing, snow-driven day. The reader then finds him/herself taking part in a lunch-counter sit-down strike with the great John Lewis. Yet what I love best is the relationship between Fred Bradley Junior and his dad. Three years after the death of Little Fred's mom, the father and son are doing their absolute best. And I haven't even mentioned Louis Armstrong yet. Wow! What a vivid, bursting-from-the-page character! Since finishing this novel, I find myself downloading Armstrong's music. Right now I have over 80 of his songs on my iPod! Trust me, Travels With Louis is not simply a kids' book--it's for anyone who enjoys a story with heart, humor, and living, breathing characters. I can see this book becoming a perennial favorite in schools.

A teenage girl remarked on how much she loved Mick Carlon's "Travels With Louis" last week, so I read it, too. What a beautiful story! Big Fred, Little Fred, Louis, Sarah Ann...they are alive in my imagination and heart. I am talking up this novel to everyone who comes...
