Born in 1809, the child of a village saddler, Louis Braille was accidentally blinded at the age of three. When he was ten he was sent to the Institution des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris, where he studied organ playing, eventually becoming a professor of the Institute in 1826. In 1837, at the age of twenty-eight, he published "Method of writing language ... by means of raised points."
