I read the book a year or so ago in Swedish. It has a complex plot revolving around Cold War politics. Mankell is frustrated with what he sees as Sweden's "hypocritical" neutrality during the Cold War years. That is, he feels that Sweden was too much on the side of the West. This leads him to some rather odd theories about the submarine crises of the 1980s. (Mysterious submarines were patrolling Swedish waters, but mainly they could never be found and Sweden was quite ambivalent about confronting them. The only one that was ever found was a Soviet sub that ran aground inside Swedish territory. Some believe there never were any subs, that it was a kind of UFO hysteria, while some believe the subs were Soviet, and others prefer to believe they were NATO spies.)
Because I couldn't get into the conspiracy theory aspect of the mystery, it was less than satisfying. And several sad things happen to Kurt Wallander on the personal front in this novel. Mankell says it will be his last Wallander novel. In an NPR interview he laughed and said at least he didn't make the same mistake as Conan Doyle in trying to get rid of his character (Sherlock Holmes). Indeed, in some ways this novel is more final than even the tragedy at the Reichenbach Falls.
