Abstract:

On October 3, 1993, a force of 120 American Delta units and Ranger infantry were dropped into Mogadishu, Somalia to abduct two Somalian warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The mission was planned to take one hour, but when two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down, it became a 15-hour ordeal. Drawing on Mark Bowden's book about the incident and extensive interviews with the author, this is a minute-by-minute look at the battle that claimed 18 American lives. US Rangers and Somali militamen share their harrowing experiences, former officials from Aidid's organization reveal how they were able to use the attack to their advantage, diplomats, and high-ranking officers reflect on the incident's legacy.
